Men in the U. S. will pay up to $15 per pill when they buy Viagra (sildenafil), according to a new Pfizer study that could be published this month.
Researchers at the drugmaker said they had previously examined data on the effects of Viagra on blood pressure. The study, which was published Monday in, examined more than a quarter-million men who took the drug for the first time and had a mean blood pressure reading of 130/80 or higher.
Pfizer, which makes Viagra, said its results showed that those who took Viagra had about twice as much blood pressure lowering as the placebo group, and had lower blood pressure-lowering risks of heart attacks, strokes and other serious conditions.
The Viagra researchers said their findings, which were presented Saturday at a research meeting in San Francisco, reflected a more cautious approach to prescribing.
Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs are approved for men between the ages of 18 and 65, and they are also approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
In the study, men in the United States who took Viagra daily and had a mean blood pressure reading of 130/80 or higher were about half as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke as men taking a placebo.
Viagra is prescribed to men who have heart disease and high blood pressure or are taking nitrates, which contain the active ingredient isenone, or nitric oxide, the heart’s chemical. They are also prescribed for angina pectoris, the medical term for chest pain, or to treat high blood pressure.
The study looked at Viagra side effects from 50 million men who took the drug for more than five years. Those taking Viagra had less than 0.1 percent of their blood pressure readings in the 90 percent of men who did get the drug.
The drug’s side effects included headaches, dizziness, upset stomach and muscle aches. The drugs are not approved for use in women and children. They are also not approved for use in children and adolescents.
The study found the risk of a heart attack or stroke was greater in men who took Viagra, but the risk dropped to about one in five in those who took the placebo. The findings are based on data from more than 10,000 people who took Viagra and had a mean blood pressure reading of 130/80 or higher for five years.
The Viagra researchers also noted that men who took the drug had more side effects such as flushing, headache, dyspepsia, back pain and nausea, which are symptoms of an allergic reaction, which can be serious. They said the risk of such problems is lower for those who use nitrates while taking the drug.
“We have a lot of people who would be very concerned if they were to get an angina attack or a stroke because of these side effects,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Besiego, who was not involved in the research. “I would be very concerned if this is a real problem.”
Viagra’s safety has been examined in more than 100,000 people since it was approved in 1998, and it has been studied extensively in people with heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. It’s also used off-label to treat high blood pressure, such as in the emergency room.
Nissen said his study was designed to examine the potential risks of using Viagra for men with erectile dysfunction. Viagra is available without a prescription in many U. pharmacies and by mail.
Pfizer, which makes the drug, said the drugs have similar side effects, including headaches and flushing. But some men taking Viagra may experience muscle aches, pain and back pain, nausea and vomiting.
“Our results are consistent with prior studies,” said Nissen. “We know that these side effects are common in some patients and, in some cases, can be reversible.”
The researchers said their findings would be published in the Nov. 21 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
